New Neighborhoods Legislation Pending Providing incentives for developers and municipalities to spur modestly priced housing on municipal sewer and strengthen core communities. - Central Vermont Chamber to House Natural Resources Committee 3/07 Our Region, like most of Vermont is struggling to address both an affordable housing shortage and dissolution of our traditional settlement patterns. Any legislation that can address both of these issues simultaneously, as these bills are intended to do, is welcome indeed. We therefore urge your support in moving forward with some legislation that paves the way for the creation of incentives for newneighborhoods according to smart growth principles..." . . .CentralVermnt Regional Planning Commission 3/07

| Central Vermont Economic Collaborative - Five regional
organizations have agreed to collaborate on economic issues they believe
are vital to residents, businesses and the Central Vermont community. The idea was born a year ago by the Green Mountain United Way. Executive Director Nancy Zorn said a needs assessment conducted by the United Way board identified a stronger local economy as the regions most pressing issue. A strong economy with better employment opportunities could lighten the caseloads of member organizations and make more funding available for those with the greatest need, Zorn said. Since economic development was outside the organizations core skills, United Way looked for groups with experience in the field. It found the Central Vermont Economic Development Corp., Regional Planning Commission, Chamber of Commerce and Community Action Council all had such experience. A series of meetings confirmed mutual interest in a number of economic issues as well as a strong desire to work together to address them. Housing topped the list of economic issues. In December, Collaborative members began meeting with veteran housing leaders to explore the interest and potential for a regionwide campaign to increase housing opportunities. The first objective was to identify housing strategies and to build working leadership teams for implementation. |
